Ever wonder just what they put in the pet-food that you buy from the stores? I have – and so have hundreds of thousands of pet lovers across the world!
It’s such a concern to us, that we now choose homemade dog food! We make our own homemade dog food for a number of reasons – one of them being the unknown composition of commercial dog food!
Coincidentally, at the time of writing this article, there has been a HUGE commercial dog and cat food poisoning scare in the USA – from contaminated dog food; resulting in the recall of around 60 Million cans and pouches of prepared pet food!
The recall of the contaminated dog food was prompted by reported deaths of pets from kidney failure or related conditions!
A type of plastic called melamine had found its way into food-stocks, later this was narrowed down to [tag-tec] wheat gluten contamination [/tag-tec] with the melamine. Why they would use wheat gluten anyway is a mystery – it is a VERY POOR source of protein!
I was always a bit suspicious about pet-food commercials, – you know – when they show lovely piles of beef or even chicken breast fillet and vegetables etc.
How CAN they use those premium quality meats in there, when those cuts are so expensive? Well it’s pretty obvious – comes down to dollars and cents – they CANNOT and – DON’T!
YES – you are reading that correctly – they DELIBERATELY MISLEAD YOU with their advertising!
We started making homemade dog food, some time after I got to see what they REALLY PUT IN – when I got to tour the inside of what they called a “protein recovery unit”, while designing a commercial security system for a client, as a consultant several years ago.
This plant used leftovers from a chicken processor – heads (beak and all), feet, feathers and gizzards – and turned it into a foul smelling dirty brown powder destined to go into pet-food! It stank so bad and that smell got into my hair and on my clothes and I am not exaggerating when I say the smell hung around me for the entire day!
This recovered protein (and others like it) is often among the first ingredients listed on the pack or can – and goes by the name meat by-products or sometimes meat meal.
It’s part of the reason that commercial dry kibble almost always smell the same! If you’re game – try eating one of those nuggets yourself – see what your dog has been putting up with!
But you see because this protein powder undergoes a high temperature process during manufacture, it’s deemed to be safe for pets.
But the huge dumpsters of the chicken heads, feet and feathers etc, I was an EYEWITNESS to, were left at ambient temperature for who knows how long – so you can imagine the putrid condition they arrive in – especially mid summer?
I simply will not feed this contaminated dog food to our dogs! Because while they MAY have killed the bacteria in this rubbish, there is still a risk they may not have destroyed some of the toxins that bacteria produce as part of their action!
And in addition to the bacterial toxins; there may also be toxins produced by moulds and fungi acting on food residues in chicken feathers or in the low grade cereals they can use in pet food. These toxins are known as aflatoxins and mycotoxins.
OK – NOW I REALISE THAT YOU DON”T KNOW ME – maybe you’re not even sure that you believe me?

FOLKS – I’m not doing a snow job here – THIS IS VERY REAL!
Not sure if you know this – but some toxins are heat tolerant! Now I don’t want to bore you with a lot of technical info on toxins – but in these days of wild claims – I do want you to see that I’m not exaggerating!
So here’s just one article – on just one bacteria – Staphylococcus aureus. About 1/2 way down the 2nd paragraph you’ll see a comment about the toxin it produces and its resistance to heat in cooking:
And that from just one bacteria – there are lots more potential sources of toxins!

Plus there’s the potential for accumulation of insecticide residues in ALL of the bird feathers they process…..AND I’m not even going to mention the stories we’ve read about the supposed euthanised animal carcasses from vets (see elsewhere on this site) or abbatoir animals that were diseased – or road kill!
In short – aside from the recent dog food contamination problem; if they use such poor sources – it HAS ALWAYS BEEN potentially contaminated dog food!
But even if you totally ignore ALL that – IT IS STILL A VERY CHEAP AND NASTY SOURCE OF PROTEIN!
Why would you feed this stuff to any pet that you care about?
